Teaching for Artistic Behavior (TAB) stands in support of Black-led movements denouncing systemic racism and police brutality against BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) including the most recent murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbury. While these latest murders have been a catalyst for an uprising, systemic racism has been deeply embedded into the fabric of our country for the past 400 years. As art educators, we acknowledge that schools are part of this system. We are committed to educating, mentoring, and supporting our TAB community to create anti-racist conversations and actions that take care of our BIPOC students, families, and colleagues. We will continue to amplify students’ personal voice and agency through their artmaking.
We are postponing all TAB Board business in an effort to save space for voices of color to be heard, for grieving and healing, for personal reflection, and for advocacy. We do not want to distract from the more important messages about systemic racism and inequities within our country. We call on all TAB teachers to join us in working to end racism in our schools and communities.
